Stained glass

When you think about stained glass you

often imagine a church with beautiful

windows with colourful designs on them

depicting saints with halos above their

heads. You would be on the right track

but there are other examples too.

Modern day buildings have come up

with more imaginative designs

incorporating stained glass structures.

Just look at the Wafi Mall in Dubai with a

pyramid-shaped skylight depicting

chariots and animals that compliment

marble floors and statues. And the

Erawan Museum in Bangkok boasts an

impressive stained-glass ceiling.

Many stained-glass works of art can be

traced back to the Middle Ages. During

those years only small pieces of glass

could be manufactured with the result

that large windows had to consist of

smaller pieces joined together. They

used lead strips to join them.

The same techniques are used today:

It starts off with a full-size drawing of

the design

Different coloured sections are

marked off on it

•

The individual sections are cut out

•

Patterns and designs can be added

to the glass where desired

The different sections of glass are

joined together with lead strips in

between

•

The finished piece can then be

installed

Windows, doors, and panels are created

by the artists to be installed at homes

and other buildings. Creating beautiful

works of art from stained glass is like

creating a magnificent multi-

dimensional painting because of the

light that shines through the creation.

That added dimension of light enables

the piece to display in different ways as

the light changes. These changes have

subtle effects on one’s mood and create

an enhanced experience for the viewers.

Just adding one or two stained glass

windows to a home actually changes

and enhances the character of that

home – a plus for any family. The same

goes for an office building or any other

structure.

Stained glass requires the artistic skill

and experience to come up with a

workable design. A window must fit

properly into the space for which it is

made, must resist wind and rain, and

also, especially in the larger windows,

must support its own weight.

The ancient Egyptians made glass and

the earliest known man-made glass

dates back 5500 years. Some examples

were made from obsidian, black volcanic

glass. Found in Egypt and Eastern

Mesopotamia. So, glass has a rich

history and was present in some ancient

civilizations. Glass windows in cathedrals

and churches have survived since the

Middle Ages. Why don’t we see more

homes with stained-glass windows

today? Isn’t it time that people start

looking into enhancing their homes with

one or two of these glazed creations?
